Matthew is a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing his love for Percussion. Being a Drummer since the age of 4, Matthew has been drumming for 21 years. Beginning in 2005 Matthew began his classical training as a Symphonic Percussionist. Every Percussion Instrument was honed from Concert Snare Drum to Mallet Percussion, (Marimbas, Vibraphones, Xylophones, etc.). In 2008 Matthew started Drum Corp with the Marching Snare Drum. Matthew continued to march Snare Drum until 2013, where he now predominantly plays the Drum Set for various Metal Bands and Jazz ensembles.
Matthew's teaching experience dates back to his high school days, where various peers would pay him for lessons. After graduating high school, Matthew began to use Drum Lessons as his main form of income. Matthew has taught in every type of teaching environment from Recording Studios to Public Parks. Matthew views every lesson as a personal interaction between the teacher and the student. This usually involves the teacher drumming alongside the student. Matthew is a firm believer in practicing his teaching methods regularly.
For beginning students, I typically start with the basic technique and understanding of how a Drum Stick reacts with a Drum Head. Proper Technique is crucial and is the primary variable in technical drumming. Intermediate students are great candidates for Matthew's Isolated Hand Technique. Understanding how each hand moves independently is a important skill to maintain and is often missed when attempting to advanced to the next level of Drumming. Advanced Students are typically taught in a studio setting, and should discuss more specific details with me prior to our first lesson.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop proper, advanced drumming technique, appreciating the complex mathematical pattern filled art form that is drumming. Advanced Technical Drumming is my strongest passion, and I love passing my skills to others. My favorite way of teaching is a dual-player setup, on a simple practice pad. This setup allows both the student and the teacher to practice in essentially any environment, and basic drum rudiments are ESSENTIAL to learn before transferring to any drum set, snare drum, etc.
