MFA, California Institute of the Arts, Multi-Focus Guitar Performance BM, University of Nevada, Reno, Applied Music Performance
Overview:
I'm a driven and versatile music instructor who loves to foster growth in students interest and abilities in music. In 2009, I graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with a Bachelor's in Music Performance. In 2011, I graduated from the prestigous California Institute of the Arts with Master's in Guitar Performance. My strongest teaching and performance trait is my versatility in styles. I have had the pleasure of performing in nearly 40 countries all of the world and have done so in rock, jazz, pop, funk, world, metal, classical and many other contexts. I have also participated in several U.S. premiere performances in Los Angeles at REDCAT and lead/compose for several ensembles in the greater Los Angeles area.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching private performance lessons since I was 14 and later taught guitar through both of my respective colleges as a graduate assistant. Immediately upon graduating, I was hired on as an Adjunct Faculty Professor at the California Institute of the Arts to teach secondary guitar lessons. I was very proud to say that I was the youngest member of the faculty at that time and I held the position for 3 semesters before leaving to tour for a year. There is no greater joy than bringing someone face-to-face with their own creative potential and sharing my deep love and joy for music with another person. I'm always seeking new students interested in exploring the vast world of possibilities in music.
METHODS USED
Regardless of their ages, I always attempt to establish what a student's interests in music are as well as their background and present faculties if applicable. From there, I attempt to develop an understanding of musical fundamentals (pitch, rhythm, timbre, dynamics) as they apply to their interests. It is crucial in my opinion to connect these essential elements of music to the context of a student's musical world. I have several books that I use regularly for examples and also, I write individual exercises for more specific issues with a student's technique and approach. Simply put, the fundamentals apply universally and thus, there is no reasons to demonstrate them as separate from a student's personal goals/interests.
LESSON STYLE
I'm very goal oriented with my students and flexible with their development. It is important to progress but also to take account of small achivements as much as large ones. Learning music is fun and the process should be fun through and through. Always emphasizing the positive aspects of a students performance and capabilities ensures a pleasant and fun experience for all involved.
