Associates degree in Education, Palm Beach State College
Since the age of 9, I've been learning and performing with a guitar. First it was recitals among my fellow peers at my local Music school. After gaining enough proficiency, I started playing in a multitude of bands as a teenager, playing various local venues around South Florida. My love of music comes from the personal fulfillment attained when creating original compositions. Learning to play songs that are enjoyable is great, but the best part of music comes from the ability to be able to invent and create something new.
Throughout my 4 year span of private guitar instruction, I studied blues and rock lead styles, which eventually paved the way to learning classical methods of guitar playing. After completing the teacher certification program and attaining an Associates degree at Palm Beach State, I worked for a plethora of after school enrichment programs that catered towards musicians. With a background of over 5 years of teaching music in private lesson and or group lesson formats in schools, homes, and summer camps. I've tended to and have taught around 250 different people since 2013. Although I've typically worked K - 12th grade students, I've taught older students in the range of their 40's - 50's. While working with School of Rock, I was an assistant band director, responsible for coming up with set lists for the youth band, teaching them the material and eventually having them play at a live venue after proving their proficiency. Teaching them not just how to play, but how to be entertaining and engaging, live performers.
No matter what age, or skill level, I always bear in mind, that no two individuals, are the same. Taking that into account, there is always an evaluation performed to gauge competency of the instrument and knowledge of music theory if you're not a beginner. If the student is a beginner, I always start with the basics, music theory, parts of the guitar, maintenance of the instrument. As someone who not only plays guitar, but also buys, sells, fixes, and builds guitars from scratch, I provide a full course of how to play, to how to build one from a kit or from scratch if desired.
My style consists of trial and error, accompanied with determination of student preferences. I've experienced a range of different students, from beginner to advanced, as well as children who were special needs students. Initially, once a students preferred style of music is deduced, I'll find songs within the students preferences, skill range and or even construct a song specifically for that student to learn fundamentals. Whether a student needs work on technique, rhythm or practical knowledge of music theory, there's no end of methods to utilize to help a student attained to their desired level of proficiency. The main aim being not to foster a student who can regurgitate information and play others songs, but eventually cultivate an innate ability to compose and structure their own original works of music.
