Concert Office Graduate Fellow for The Longy School of Music
I began my journey as a musician in Macungie, Pennsylvania. Continuously intrigued by the music world I decided to start studying music more formally at The Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts in Bethlehem, PA. My passion for music and art only grew as I was surrounded by other artists who were so engaged in the artforms they produced. I continued to round out her education at Gettysburg College, PA, a liberal arts school where I obtained a Bachelor's degree in music performance as well as an English minor. It is here that I discovered her interest for performing with my colleagues in chamber groups as well as sharing my love of music by being a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, an international women’s music fraternity. I also gained music administrative work experience with her position of Music Ambassador. I then continued my musical education and obtained my Master's Degree in Flute Performance at The Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This is where I was encouraged to experiment with the merging of music with other artforms. During her time here is where Maya was able to commission and collaborate with composer Christina George where they combined my two passions, flute and dance, to create “…and still… and still…”, a work for flute, electronics, and dance, which was premiered at The Longy School of Music in April 2022. I have studied flute privately with Georgie Graybill, Robin Kani, Dr. Teresa Bowers, and Sergio Pallottelli, respectively. Throughout her career, I have participated in numerous masterclasses and flute intensives with world-renowned flutists, such as Emi Ferguson, Göran Marcusson, Walfrid Kujala, Matthieu Gauci-Ancelin, and Paul Edmund-Davies. I have also performed in several countries, such as Germany, Czech Republic, and Italy.
I have not yet started my teaching career but I am super excited to start gaining experience with all of you! I have taken a flute pedagogy class at my undergraduate, Gettysburg College and a woodwind and brass method class during my graduate studies at The Longy School of Music. I have much more experience performing and participating in summer flute masterclasses. I do hope to gain professional music performance experience by being in an orchestra, opera, or ballet, doing chamber music, and organizing small solo concerts.
First I will assess each individual student based on their own skill level and requirements. In each lesson we will work on fundamentals of flute techniques, whether that is posture, embouchure, and/or finger techniques. In each of these lessons I hope to instill knowledge of music theory and history. We will learn many different styles of music ranging from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century flute music. If there is any specific music the student or parent would like their child to work on such as music for school in band or orchestra we will work on those as well. Each student should also bring or recommend a piece or style of music they would like to learn for their own fun and enjoyment.
As a musician and teacher, I primarily view music as one means of artistic self-expression. In my student’s journey of self-expression, I will help them to learn music history, music theory, and different musical cultures which can influence their perspective on the world around them, as well as how they see themselves. Through music I teach self-discipline, patience, and good practice methods while learning the flute. In my studio, I teach the typical cannon flute repertoire while encouraging students to find a piece, no matter what style or genre, they would like to learn each quarter. Each lesson is tailored towards each individual student’s pace and modality they will best benefit from. At the end of each year, there will be a final studio recital where each student will get to perform a piece they have worked on during the year to ensure they get a chance to have formal performance experience. From my teaching, I want students to get the most out of the experience of learning the flute while being a facilitator of self-expression and individuality.
