BM, Berklee College of Music
I am a flute player of over 15 years with 8 years teaching experience who is passionate about providing quality lessons, especially to students who would not otherwise have access to them. I am a professional flautist and graduate of Berklee College of Music. Growing up, while I was blessed with a wonderful mentor on flute, I knew a lot of people who never had the chance to take lessons. Seeing students' excitement to learn and watching their progression makes me even more excited to provide the best instruction that I can.
I began teaching flute to middle schoolers through a summer program in a local public school. Since then, I have been focusing on providing lessons to students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to access them, due to accessibility, financial or any other reasons. I do teach all ages. I Like to focus on creating a strong technical foundation that allows the student to comfortably progress into the more difficult levels of playing the instrument in any style. Working with the students strengths, allowing them to learn music that they enjoy and want to play, but also pushing them to bring out the best version of themselves and aiming for progression and consistency in everything that they do.
I will begin by asking a student what their goals are when it comes to playing the flute. I will base my teaching material and instructions methods off of this consultation and tune specifically to each student. If a student comes in knowing nothing, I will start with the very basics of the instrument (instrument set up and care, sound production, fingerings etc.). once they have the building blocks, I can them begin teaching them the specifics of whatever genre they want to focus on, be it classical, jazz, soul, hip hop etc. All of my lessons are very customized and I will continue to make changes as needed throughout the students' time with me to make sure that I am providing exactly what they want.
As someone who is extremely passionate about music, I want to see my students just as excited about learning. I also want to see them reaching their full potential and musical goals, whatever they may be. I recognize that every student has different experience levels, learning speeds, musical goals etc. I think it's important to tailor to these differences and let students progress at their own pace while also pushing them enough to keep them on track. Clear communication with my students is key, I will find out exactly what they want and then provide songs, exercises, scales, listenings, etc. that I feel will be most beneficial to them.
