Texas Tech University BM: Music Performance
Helen Jones Foundation Scholarship 2014-2018 Texas Tech University Undergraduate Woodwind Quintet founder 2016-2017 Performer at TMEA with Texas Tech Flute Choir 2017
I am a passionate classical and jazz musician who enjoys performing and helping others discover their passion for music as well. I graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor's of Music degree in flute performance and am now working on my music therapy degree through the Saint Mary of the Woods Music Therapy Distance Equivalency program. I love to play in orchestras and bands, as well as performing solo on a variety of instruments. I have been teaching lessons for almost 3 years to a variety of ages and ability levels. I had to take a break from teaching lessons in college and am looking forward to getting back to doing something I love.
My teaching experience began in high school when I started teaching beginning flute players and then branched out to advanced high schoolers as well. I encourage my students to keep performance goals in mind such as recitals and competitions. I focus on tone and musicianship development through various exercises, etudes, and classic repertoire. I love motivating my students to further their musicianship and I also love helping my students connect things they learn in music to things in their everyday life. I believe music is the gateway to most learning in life.
For beginning students I like to use a combination of Rubank's Elementery etudes and a privately owned beginner's method book although I am willing to teach from a variety of beginning resources. I take into consideration that each student learns differently and some methods may be more successful than others. I like to start introducing solo repertoire as soon as the basics are down. For more advanced students I like to use Lisa Garner Santa's Flute Theory Workout along with advanced solo repetoire and advanced Eubanks etudes. I believe scales are the basis for musical structure and should be an important part of any player's abilities.
My favorite part of teaching lessons is the personal atmosphere where students feel comfortable and able to ask questions in order to learn in a style that best suites them. I love when a student genuinely understands or masters a concept and feels success and accomplishment. I strive to let all my students experience that successful joy through their learning process. I also try to connect teaching music to teaching lifelong lessons as the two are very connected and the better you understand one the better you understand the other.
