I am a passionate music educator from Alabama. I am currently student teaching in order to graduate from the University of North Alabama with my Bachelors in Music Education and obtain my teaching certificate. I have played violin for more than 10 years and viola for over 5. I currently perform with the Shoals Symphony Orchestra and have played notable concerts such as movie series for Home Alone and Pirates of the Caribbean 2. In June of 2019, I traveled with a combined orchestra and choir from UNA to perform in Costa Rica.
My passion for teaching stringed instruments has brought me to work with students from the ages of 6 to 23 during my college career. I have also spent many semesters tutoring Music Theory to my peers. I work to create a supportive environment for my students that help them to grow as musicians technically and expressively. I encourage practicing for all my students, assigning practicing requirements that will challenge students but I know are accomplishable in the week between lessons. I encourage my older students to get involved in school and youth symphony programs and work with them to practice for auditions for competitions as well as summer camps and ensembles.
For beginning students, I use the first Essential Element book to introduce the first instrument and theory concepts. Once students have progressed past this book, I use the Tune a Day series along with the accompanying scale book. This book introduces students to solo and duet pieces worthy of a recital performance. Once they have reached the third book and are progressing through etudes, students begin working on individual solo repertoire pieces. For adults, I also begin with Essential Elements, attempting to progress them through the series faster with the help of theory tools such as musictheory.net. I get to know all my students and work to create curriculum tat is engaging and relatable for them while progressing through important musical and instrument techniques.
The reward of teaching is seeing a student progress and gain the skills needed to propel themselves forward musically. I work hard to help students develop and cultivate their passion for music and playing music well for others. Nothing is more important in music than finding love and joy for playing one's instrument. Through setting consistent goals and acknowledging a student's accomplishments I help fuel a student's motivation to play through steady progress. Once the basics are set, I work with each student individually finding music that inspires them to succeed and keep playing.
My experience as a parent has been excellent. Megan has been professional and kind. My daughter (10) feels Megan shows her a clear path forward and doesn’t progress until she’s sure my daughter “gets it”. My daughter also appreciates Megan’s explanation and demonstration of the lesson.
I was very new to the violin and learning music in general when I started my lessons with Megan. She is very good at teaching the basics and meeting you where you are. She was always pleasant and answered any questions I had. I had a great experience and learned so much. Highly recommend Megan!
