BM, George Mason University, Music Education (expected Dec. 2015) CPR/First Aid/AED certified
I grew up on Long Island New York and am currently finsihing up my music education degree at George Mason University. I have been playing flute for 13 years now and it's time I share my experience and love for music with others! To me, music is an outlet and it's important that my students fall in love with music while also learning about it. Music has always been a driving force in my life and one of the greatest things I've been involved in. I hope to give my students the same opportunities I have had and make music an important part of their lives as well.
I have been teaching private flute lessons since High School and fell in love with teaching in general right away. As my skills have increased, I've learned to work with private students in other instruments as well. Over the past 6 years, I have actively been working to expand my studio and teaching experience in any way possible. Since starting college, I have gained teaching experience through my private students as well as experience in the classroom. I work with various music companies as a music instructor and also work for Fairfax County Public Schools as a substitute teacher. I help run sectionals for various instrument groups at local private and public schools and have also volunteered my time doing the same. I have definitely caught the "teaching bug" and have fallen in love with helping students realize their full potentials on there chosen instruments!
A typical lesson with me will be structured like this: Emphasis on basics (scales, studies, tuning, etc) Sight Reading and Ear Training Learning techniques through pieces I am always aiming for technical building through the process of working through real music in order to keep lessons fun and engaging. I typically start beginning students with Essential Elements and work through the basics with that approach.
Teaching music to students has always been a huge passion of mine and developing a love of music is always my top priority. I had a lot of bad habits that developed over years so it will always be my goal to make sure this isn't the case with my students. Playing music should be fun, never too hard or painful. I will put a big emphasis on posture and building proper habits from the beginning. I encourage students to set realistic, yearly goals at the beginnning of there studies with me and we focus our bigger picture idea on these goals. I also encourage students to pick pieces that insprire them and make them want to play more.
