Overview:
I am a teacher dedicated to sharing my love and knowledge of music and the violin. In May 2014, I graduated from the Baldwin Wallace conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance. Since graduation, I have performed with multiple orchestras such as the Springfield Symphony Orchestra (Ohio), Richmond Symphony Orchestra (Indiana), the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, the Ohio Valley Symphony, and the Middletown Symphony (Ohio). Since my teenage years, I have taught over 30 students age 4 through varying adult ages. I love exploring different genres and methods to make the lesson fun and insightful.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching when I was in high school at 17 years old. My private teacher was abroad for the summer, so she gave me her younger students to teach while she was away. Since then, I have taught students of all ages between four years old and varying adult ages. My main goal in teaching is to inspire a passion and love for music. I tailor the lesson and teaching method to the student and their personal goals. For example, if a child is beginning on the instrument for the first time and looking to play in the school music programs, I will start with a few different method books and focus on technique (while incorporating various puzzles and games of course!) On the other hand, there may be someone who has previously played and may just be looking to learn some of their favorite songs. I believe in a personal lesson experience to make sure the student is getting what they desire out of the lessons.
METHODS USED
When starting with a young beginner student, I typically start with the beginning Suzuki Method books or Essential Elements books. I will also work on school repertoire if applicable. Once they have advanced past the level of the Suzuki books, I will begin to introduce solo works appropriate for their level and desire. When teaching adults of varying abilities, my methods are much more tailored to their wants in terms of style of music, difficulty of the pieces and the speed at which they would like to learn. However, no matter the level/experience, I always try incorporate new music, games and puzzles to keep the material new and fun.
LESSON STYLE
Teaching music has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. I believe it is so important to recognize that each student learns and progresses differently, therefore my approach to each student will vary. I am always sure to set realistic goals and recognize accomplishments while still maintaining a disciplined atmosphere. By trying to recognize what inspires each individual, it is much easier to tailor my teaching to their wants and needs. For example, if a student is also playing in a school/extra-curricular music program I make sure to divide lesson time between school music, solo music, and any extra/fun pieces they may want to play as well. It keeps them interested and more excited about learning about music if you are able to appeal to their own interests.
