I have been teaching music in the Seattle area for the past 6 years. I teach beginning band & orchestra to grades 4-5 as well as middle school band and orchestra. I am experienced teaching beginners to more proficient students. I also play clarinet with the Seattle Wind Symphony and previous was playing with the Highline Symphonic Band. I played tenor saxophone in jazz band for several years as well. I love playing jazz, classical, contemporary and more! In my free time, I enjoy doing yoga, walking my dog, drinking coffee, and going camping.
I have been teaching private lessons to students since 2004. I mainly teaching clarinet and saxophone privately, but I also teach beginning and intermediate instrumental music students in the public schools. In the schools, I have taught flute, clarinet, oboe, bass clarinet, saxophone (alto & tenor), trumpet, trombone, euphonium, violin, viola, cello, and string bass. I have loved teaching all of these instruments! My specialty area remains woodwinds, mainly clarinet and saxophone. I encourage my students to practice outside of their scheduled lesson. Students make more progress on their instruments when practicing regularly - for beginners, I recommend 10 minutes a day, five days a week. As students progress, I encourage increasing their practice time.
For beginner students, I use a variety of lesson materials. If the student is involved in band, I try to stick with whatever book their teacher has assigned them. In Seattle Public Schools, we use Standard of Excellence. I also add other materials as the student advances such as scales, etudes, and finger and rhythm exercises. Adding in music the student finds exciting also helps them feel more encouraged to practice! I will incorporate pop music, jazz, holiday music, or anything else the student would like to learn.
First and foremost, I want to instill in my students a love for music. I want to show them how to express themselves through the art of music. Each student learns in a different way and at a different pace, so I adjust my teaching style to best fit the needs of the individual. I help my students set their own goals so that they can take ownership of their learning and feel they are moving forward at a pace that best suits their needs. I like to find music that excites each student so they feel more motivated to practice and move forward in their studies.
