Hi! My name is Meghna D. and I am a passionate performer who loves teaching. I have been studying music since I was 3, including Indian and western classical voice, opera, jazz voice, broadway, classical and jazz guitar, and classical and jazz piano. I am currently studying Contemporary Voice at New York University! I attended Pre-college at Manhattan School of Music for classical and jazz voice. I am passionate about musical theater and have performed lead roles in productions at my school and NJ School of Dramatic Arts. I was named a 2021 National YoungArts Foundation Finalist in Popular Voice and received the Merit Winner award for songwriting in the 2020 YoungArts Competition. I was selected into Grammy Camp 2020 and 2021 for Vocal Performance, NYU Contemporary Voice Workshop in 2020, and the NYU Songwriting Intensive in 2020. I won 1st in the 2019 NATS NJ Doris Lenz competition, 1st in the 2020 NATS NY, and 2nd in the 2021 NATS Eastern Competition. I was also recognized as a semi-finalist for the 2020 Hal Leonard vocal competition in the musical theater category and received the best soloist award for Blues/Pop/Rock Voice in the Downbeat Magazine 2021 Competition. I love to perform in benefit concerts to raise funds for noble causes and spread the message of love, hope and humanity through music.
Teaching students of all ages is an activity that brings me a lot of joy! I have traveled to India to teach students there, as well as taught in the US. I am currently studying at NYU learning as well as teaching! I feel strongly about the fact that you never stop learning! One thing that is extremely important is to practice consistently. Practice does not make perfect; practice makes permanent. This consistency will help them gain a passion for their instrument and help them make progress as fast as they choose. Learning an instrument takes time and energy, which means students need to put in the work! The work they put in for their instrument should have love. I am an avid songwriter, and I encourage students to compose their own music as well. I also love performing, and performing is a key aspect to keep in mind when learning music. Every student should set their own goals, whether they are learning for fun, or with the intention of performing!
For beginning students who are children, I greatly emphasize vocal exercises to help strengthen their voice. Once the student has a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce repertoire based on the genre of music they prefer, as well as basic songs that would benefit them to learn. No matter the ability level, fundamentals are of the utmost importance. Having a wide range of repertoire is also helpful– learning different styles helps a student become more versatile. Recording while practicing is also vital– not for the teacher, but for the student. Listening to yourself sing is the best way to improve upon yourself.
I want my students to have a passion for music and be interested in improving as a musician. Each student should set their own goals, with the help of their parents and/or teacher, to have a clear path of what they want to achieve. Auditioning for various opportunities and participating in competitions is highly encouraged. This teaches students how to prepare with practice, and how to observe other students and learn from them. This also allows them to perform and have something to show for their dedication, if they choose to!
