I love to share my love and joy for music as I teach my students. In 1999, I graduated from Lebanon Valley College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education with piano as my major instrument. I began performing by singing in church as a child. I've participated musically in church worship services throughout my life soloing and accompanying choirs on flute and piano. Also, I've musically lead church worship services by piano and participated as part of church and community musical ensembles and organizations through the years.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience began while in college in Annville-Cleona and Palmyra School Districts in college and then after graduating with my job in Maryland with Prince George's County Schools. Most of those experiences were with general music classroom teaching with some private band instrumental teaching and directing. Most of my teaching experience has been with piano instruction and a little band instrumental instruction in my home studio since my resignation from that first music teaching job. Also, I've done a little directing of church adult and children's choirs.
METHODS USED
I typically use the Alfred series of Piano Method materials to teach my piano students. Along with those materials, I add solo pieces for my students to learn as they progress. With my younger students especially, I enjoy introducing fun pieces for holidays throughout the year. I teach to my individual students abilities and interests to keep it engaging, enjoyable and fun too! I also try to teach music theory, mostly with my younger students, that requires the completion of written homework for lessons.
LESSON STYLE
I teach my students to keep a regular practice routine to keep them progressing smoothly and actively engaged. I like to motivate my students with little rewards like stickers and pencils to keep them encouraged and motivated too. I get to know my students and their musical interests to try to include music they really like to make it fun for them. I try to not make it too easy for them so that they don't lose their motivation, but not too hard so that they get overly frustrated and quit trying.
