Music has been a part of my life since before I can remember, having come from a very musical family. I began piano lessons at age six, which paved the way for further musical training. I have played the flute since I was 10 years old, and playing has become one of my great passions. I received my Bachelor of Music from Lamar University in 2006, and my Master of Music from the University of Houston in 2010. I love performing, and my career dream is to perform with a professional orchestra, while continuing to provide flute lessons.
I have taught flute since 2004, as a student at Lamar University, and I greatly enjoy passing on my love and knowledge of music to others. My teaching experience ranges from new beginners to advancing high school students, and I am also willing to take on novice-to-intermediate adult students. In my years of teaching, one of the most rewarding assets is watching each student improve and grow in their musical skills and love of music. While my primary field is classical music, I incorporate other fields, such as jazz or pop music, to maintain a dynamic of diverse repertoire tailored to my students' enjoyment. One of the most important aspects of flute lessons is that the student enjoy playing and appreciate great music. Enjoyment is a key component for musical success.
I have universal expectations for all my students, especially for practicing and lesson structure. However, I know that each person will have a different way of learning that works best for them, and so I choose the approach that will help each student excel. I choose techniques and repertoire based on a student's current abilities and progress and what I think best suits his or her tastes. I also encourage my students to participate in school or area auditions and competitions that mark a student's achievements and success.
I incorporate a positive dynamic throughout lessons that will encourage each student to strive for success and overall enjoyment of music. I firmly believe in an individual approach to each student, highlighting that student's strengths while encouraging improvement. If a student struggles with a particular aspect of playing, I will select the techniques that will hone his or her abilities best and produce a desired outcome. Importantly, I always make a point of praising a student's progress and achievements, as I believe this is the best method of encouraging continuous improvement.
