Teaching and sharing music is my passion. I am a performer, graduating with a degree in Cello Performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 2011. During my time at Oberlin, I performed across the country and even in Europe, but I was always able to come home to my students that I taught throughout my degree. I have experience working in the international sector of music performance, coming together with musicians from around the world to put together chamber music ensembles. I have held principal positions in orchestras, and played solo music in castles, recital halls, hospitals and nursing homes (by far my most rewarding audience!)
I have 11 or 12 years of teaching experience. I began teaching music lessons in high school, coaching chamber music ensembles for the middle-school music program. In college, I began teaching privately, first only children, then college students, then adults, until I had a very diverse studio. I love to challenge my students, but also want to make sure that their work results in deep satisfaction and joy, never stress or feelings of inadequacy. I encourage regular and focused practice in the pursuit of this enjoyment, but I believe in making music fun! I love diversifying music styles, adding some folk and jazz into the more standard classical repertoire. I don't believe in "one-size-fits-all", and love to find what music works best with each student's unique tastes and personality.
I don't use one single method in my teaching. I firmly believe that strictly adhering to a single stylistic method produces strictly one-dimensional students. I encourage all my beginners to use Suzuki, especially in the development of their musical ear. I like to add solo and ensemble repertoire based on the student's unique musical personality, and because every body is different, I tailor all technical work to fit the student's specific physical needs, challenges, and strengths. I believe in the promotion of musical well-being as a key part to any methodology.
Each student is unique, and I never give the same music lesson twice. I like to set specific, realistic goals, and celebrate their achievement, and use a structure that is easily understood. Above all, optimism and a positive atmosphere are absolute requirements for every lesson, as I love to nurture the inner-musician as much as I love to train the outer-musician. Music is not made, if it is not loved. My students love what they do, and are proud of it.
