Education is a central part of my life and will continue to be for my whole career. When I'm not teaching music, I teach English to kids living in China over the Internet! I have been teaching music for several years in individual, group and clinic settings. I recently graduated from the University of Iowa where I was lucky enough to study many different kinds of music. I became interested in Caribbean music and steelpan and through the University and had the great experience of competing in Panorama in Trinidad & Tobago. I also play and teach piano and love many different composers and styles.
I began teaching shortly before I graduated high school in 2012. My high school had a very successful marching band program and was closely tied with a local drum corps, which helped me become experienced in leading group rehearsals and clinics for drumlines and front ensembles around this time. Leading in to college, I continued this and also began teaching students individually which only helped to underline my love of teaching! Since I've started teaching, I've made it my mission to collect and experience as many different styles and kinds of music to give my students the most fun and interesting lessons possible. Music is fun, and learning it should be too!
I take a very individual approach to my teaching plans- each student has their own attention spans, goals, interests and abilities! When I was first learning piano, I was frustrated by the music choices my teacher was picking for me and this usually made me not in the mood to practice. Over the years I've collected, written and purchased various pieces and exercises for both piano and percussion that allow me to create custom lessons for my students.
Education should be as individual as each student! I try to adapt my personality and teaching style to best fit my students. Each lesson or clinic will demand something different of me, just like each topic will. Positive reinforcement has always been my go-to. Playing music in front of one person (or 50) can be a soul bearing experience, and I've found that encouragement can be everything!
