I have been playing the guitar for nearly 20 years, and have been performing live regularly for the past 10 years both as a solo acoustic act and as a member of various bands. I primarily perform my own compositions and am deeply passionate about the art of songwriting. I would love to teach/ help students interested in writing their own songs discover their own artistic voice. I specialize in acoustic finger style guitar, so if you are looking to learn to do some metal shredding I am probably not the teacher for you.
I have been teaching guitar/ songwriting since I was a teenager. My first students were my nephews and niece, which was a great introduction in learning to work with young kids. Over the past decade I have taught students of all ages and experience levels while working at a music store in Columbus. I specialize in songwriting, and love to work with students of all skill levels who want to begin composing their own songs but aren't certain how to begin. As well as working with experienced songwriters who are feeling artistically stagnate. Apart from songwriting, I also have a deep understanding of theory, so if you are brand new to the guitar and don't even know where to begin I can guide you in the right direction of what to start with.
I believe each student is unique, and aim to help the student fall deeper in love with the guitar by meeting them where they are at with their own interests and desires with the instrument. I have had multiple different instructors throughout my life, and some of them seem to have had their own agenda and what they wanted me to be learning. I instead prefer to understand what the students goals are with the guitar, and devise lesson plans based on what each student hopes to gain from taking lessons.
What I more than anything is to help my students fall deeper in love with music and with the guitar. I want lessons to be an enjoyable and exciting experience for students who have the desire to learn. Of course I want my students to work hard and push themselves, but I have seen far too many people interested in learning an instrument get overwhelmed and give up before they are ever get off the ground, and this is not something I want to see with my own students. Playing an instrument can be one of the most wonderful things about life, but it takes a lot of time and hard work to get to the point where you can just freely make music, and I want to help students get to that place because I know how joyous and meaningful it is to me.
