2011 - Holland America Cruise Line musician 2014 - New Orleans Jazz Quartet
I am a man who loves life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In 2009 I graduated from Florida State University with a bachelors of arts in music. During my education I worked with Florida States school of theater and dance. After graduation I landed a job with Holland America Cruise Line being a musician on there number one ship in 2011. I have also spent about two years in New Orleans studying the beginnings of American popular music as well as performing with a french quarter jazz quartet for over a year. After having some time to reflect and distill what I have studied I am sure I can teach others the fundamentals of drumming and beyond.
My musical experience dates back to 1997 when I first had the opportunity to start playing the snare drum in my middle school band program. It was a great way for me to feel better about my school day and highlighted the common interests I had with my classmates. A few years later I wanted a drum set and started a band with my school mates to showcase songs like, "wipe out" and "all the small things" ( a pop/punk song from blink 182 in 1999) at the school talent show. Through out high school my interest in music increased and I chose to further my interest once I started my studies at Florida State University.
Hearing someone practicing the drums can be down right annoying, especially for your household and neighbors. So my method helps the student practice with minimal resistance from parents, peers and siblings. Electronic drums are becoming popular but also reduce the excitement of acoustic drums and cymbals. So my method is open to all variations of modern "stick" drums. Lessons will be adjusted to what the student wants to do. I have books to recommend like "Syncopation" by Ted Reed and "Realist Rock" by Carmine Appice. Drum videos have also become very popular and I would encourage these as well.
My teaching style encourages meticulous time keeping and a good feel. The student will learn to count while drumming and also keep real time as in seconds and minutes. The student will learn the importance of the metronome "a mechanical or electrical instrument that makes repeated clicking sounds at an adjustable pace, used for marking rhythm, especially in practicing music."(dictionary.com) The student will learn how to describe time signatures and there application in various drum solo's. The "drum roll" and its variations will be essential for students to have success with my lessons. Technique will be taught as well as music theory basics.
