Overview:
I am an instructor who holds his students to a high standard. In 2013 I graduated from the University of Central Missouri with a BM in Performance where I studied Dr. Alan Wenger. After that, in 2015, I received my MM in Performance from DePaul Univeristy where I studied with members of the Chicago Symphony, Chicago Lyric Opera, and Chicago Sinfonietta. Since then I have been freelancing and teaching around the Kansas City Metro Area. I play in several local ensembles including the Civic Orchestra of Kansas City, KU Medical Arts Symphony, and the Midwest Chamber Ensemble.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching since I was a senior in high school. Over the last 10 years I have come to realize that all students learn differently and all will encounter problems in different ways. Some students will overcome these challenges in a few days, others it may take a few months. I know because I was one of those students where it took a few months. I always tell my students that I will do everything I can to help them as long as I can tell they are practicing (and I will be able to tell). I encourage my students to do recitals and my high school students are required to audition for All-District ensembles (they do not have to accept the position but they do need to audition).
METHODS USED
Beginning students will most likely be playing from whatever band book their school uses. If the student is not in middle school yet, then they will most likely start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As students progress, more material will be added later. For intermediate students, I would begin to add solo repertoire and would most likely also add the Clarke Characteristic Studies. With my more advanced students there is more variation as these are typically the students that have all district, solo contests, and college auditions to prepare for. In general these students will at least be playing out of the Clarke Characteristic Studies, Arban Complete Method, Thompson Buzzing Book, and the Schubreck Lip Flexibilities. Method books and solos are added based on need and what the students finances allow.
LESSON STYLE
I ask my students what it is they are trying to accomplish with me. Typically I look for goals that I know the student can accomplish if they apply themselves. I love nothing more than seeing them push themselves and watch them improve their playing to a level they originally thought they could not achieve. The problem is most students come in assuming they aren't good simply because they aren't at the same level as someone else. I tell my students its not that they are better, its that they simply pay attention more to the details. If you are willing to put in the work, I can help you become just as good if not better.
