1990 - Wayne State University Full Talent Scholarship for Jazz Guitar
Overview:
I have a degree from Wayne State University where I studied Jazz Guitar and Music technology. I've played in bands ranging from Big Band Swing to Country to Punk Rock playing guitar, bass and piano/keyboards. My studio is equipped with two amplifiers and the ability to record the student for playback. This provides a chance to hear oneself. In addition to this I have a library of sheet music including instructional books. Currently I am the lead guitar player in Columbus, OH country band Shotgun McCoy.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching music, mainly guitar and piano, off and on for almost 15 years. My style varies on the age of the student, what they hope to achieve and where their strengths lie. I feel it's important for the student to learn the fundamentals while simultaneously having fun with their instrument and exploring the music they feel passionate about. For me, the trick is inspiring the student to pick up their instrument everyday and want to play it. I also like to focus on composition and performance while helping them develop their own style.
METHODS USED
For beginning students, I start with the traditional Mel Bay (or comparable) beginner books that focus on the fundamentals while building strength and coordination and just build from there. For students with a little more experience, I like to focus on more challenging exercises and concepts while nurturing their knowledge of music theory and performance. Each student is different and knowing what motivates them motivates me. My goal is to have them want to pick up their instrument and play.
LESSON STYLE
Every student is different. Music Theory, various styles and forms and performance are all important and part of the main focus. I also like them to learn songs and styles that they enjoy. It's important for them to pick up their instrument every day, develop their calluses and coordination. I find this not only encourages them to play and explore more on their own, but keeps their focus on developing their own style. Studies show that children that learn how to play an instrument can apply that knowledge to other subjects, such as math. I like to encourage that as well.
