Currently working on a BM in Guitar Performance at the University of Texas at El Paso
I am currently working on an BM in Guitar Performance at the University of Texas at El Paso where I have been taking lessons from Hiram Rodriguez. I first started playing guitar 10 years ago learning rock songs and things of that nature and about 6 years ago I started learning classical guitar. I have taken lessons with John Siqueiros for a short time as well as a master student from the University of Texas at El Paso Edgar Camargo and I took some jazz lessons from Mr. Mahoney at UTEP. In 2017 I held my first recital at a library performing as soloist as well with a duo.
I first started teaching kids privately about 4 years ago in their home and I started off with just basic stuff like note reading and pop music but as time passed by I came up with a teaching method that I am pretty confident in. I also worked at a tutoring center teaching guitar and piano to the kids focusing on more rock styles of playing. So my students were learning music from their favorite bands and what they wanted to learn. I would ask them what they wanted to learn and I would learn it first and then teach them the part.
My method for all my students is for them to be classically trained so learning the notes on the fretboard, proper technique and note reading. I use Christopher Parkening's Guitar method Book I to help my students learn the proper technique to play and for them to learn the notes in first position on the guitar and on the staff and beginner chord reading using chord diagrams at first and then showing them the chords on the staff. After that I look for different repertoire that will challenge the student depending on what level they are but will be able to do it. During that time I also like to ask my students if their is anything they want to learn to keep them interested in other styles of music.
My teaching style is very different depending on what works for each student so they can learn quick and easy and still make it fun for them. I encourage a lot of my students to have goals on why they want to learn guitar and I will help them achieve their goals and more. With that said I am very demanding when it comes to practice and being ready for each lesson to learn and get better at the guitar. I give a lot of compliments and little prizes for when my students are doing a great in their lessons and I see improvement in their playing.
