MM, Appalachian State University, Percussion Performance
BS, Western Carolina University, Music Education
Overview:
I consider myself to be a Swiss Army Musician. I earned my BS in Music Ed from Western Carolina University and my MM in Percussion from Appalachian State University. I love variety more than anything! I love widening my perspective by dipping my toes into as many different styles and instruments as possible. That said, my two main avenues are rock and metal drum set, and marimba. I love having a foot in both the metal and classical worlds. I think it takes a variety of perspectives to be a well-rounded person, as well as a well-rounded musician.
EXPERIENCE
Most of my teaching experience so far has been in the concert/marching band, teaching middle school band and high school and university marching percussion ensembles, which I have been doing for the last eight years. I have also taught individual percussion lessons to high school and college students off and on throughout my undergraduate and graduate careers. I have taught drum set lessons for five years so far. My performance experience includes seven years of marching band, eleven years of concert band/wind ensemble, two years of orchestra, five years of drumming for the worship team, three years drumming with Depot Street, and one year drumming with Crimson Sunset.
METHODS USED
Every student is different, with different goals, different passions, and different backgrounds. So every student needs a different teaching method. I prefer to spend some time in the first lesson getting to know the student and his or her background to determine what specific methods work best for them. I like to put concepts into a musical application as soon as we can. Once the student has a grasp of the basic 4/4 pattern, I have them loop it while I accompany them on bass or guitar. It's the same once they learn basic fills, or a shuffle pattern, or whatever content we are covering: practice it in isolation until it's comfortable, then use an engaging musical context to make it real.
LESSON STYLE
My goal isn't to teach music. My goal is to help my students grow to love music more, and teaching them music is just the means to that end. My one-on-one teaching style is very relaxed and personable. I get to know students as people, and let them get to know me. My teaching philosophy boils down to four words, which any of my marching band students could recite to you: "Get better, have fun." You need both for the experience to be meaningful. So I always push students to do more, to accomplish the next goal in the most positive, encouraging way I can. My goal is never to be my students' best teacher: my goal is to encourage every student to become his or her own best teacher!
