Overview:
I love playing guitar and strive to share the passion with others. I have been performing since I began playing guitar 12 years ago. In 2012, I began my studies at Oberlin Conservatory music as a Jazz Guitar Performance major. I graduated in 2017, with a B.M. in Jazz Guitar Performance and a B.A. in Political Science. My experience has granted me the opportunity of performing many styles of music in a variety of ensembles. I have performed in clubs throughout the Cleveland and Washington, D.C. areas, and have recorded one studio album as a sideman.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching guitar for 7 years. I began teaching when I was 17 years old at Maley's Music in Arlington, Virginia. I had the opportunity to teach students of all ages, from very young to adult students. It was here that I developed my passion for teaching. I continued teaching regularly throughout my time at Oberlin Conservatory. Each semester, I taught 4 college students who were taking guitar lessons for academic credit. I have experience teaching many styles of music. Over my 7 years teaching, I have continually strived to improve as a teacher and inspire my students.
METHODS USED
My methods depend both on the experience and interests of the student. Generally, I hope that students acquire enough skills that they can begin teaching themselves. This involves basic technical abilities, understanding of the layout of the guitar, basic reading skills, ear training skills, understanding of music theory, and rhythm skills. I believe that once a student can begin learning on their own time is when real growth happens through practice. To help students acquire these skills, I use a variety of resources, which I choose depending on how the student likes to learn.
LESSON STYLE
The most important thing for me is that the student is playing in every lesson. I like to know what the student enjoys listening to, and go from there. It is my belief that there is nothing too hard to learn. Whatever the student is interested in, I promise we can get there. Learning songs not only helps build interests, but is one of the best ways to learn. I strongly believe in the importance of improvisation because I believe it helps develop many skills, and I love jamming with students in lessons.
