I'm passionate about music all around. As a performer, educator, engineer and composer I find music to be fascinating. I want to help you see the fascinating worlds music has to offer. I have a Bachelor of Science in Music Production and Recording Arts from Elon University in Elon, North Carolina. I am also attending UNCSA for a Master's degree in Film Music Composition. I have been playing drums for 11 years, been playing in bands since high school and have been teaching private lessons for over 8 years.
I have taught kids from ages 9 to fourteen, and am open to teaching anyone of any skill level. I also offer lessons in composition and recording/engineering music production. I encourage regular practice and make sure, especially for kids, that they leave every lesson with something new. I focus on learning how to be a successful musician all around, emphasizing on good technique, performance, and each student's individual sound. I work with students toward their own goals, no matter how big or small.
I work out of various Drum Set method books, which at first I give page copies for students. Once students are acclimated to how lessons work (and sure they want to continue) I encourage them to purchase the book(s) we are working out of. I try to work out of books for reading, but most other learning I like to take on personally. Books are great for learning and seeing new material, but they don't do much for a performance, writing parts or learning songs. I like to start out with extremely simple fundamentals which can then be seen in most every piece of music. Connections like that are important for any student. For younger students I heavily emphasize just having fun, and that every lesson they can go home and say 'look mom/dad at what I can do!' I believe that keeping students interested and focused on having fun while learning new material and techniques is the best strategy to ensure growth as a musician.
I set goals for my students to achieve and once the basics have been mastered I open it up for them to decide. IF they want to be a performer I will work with them toward being a great performer. If they want to be a better technical player we will work on mastering techniques and continually challenging them, if they want to write their own parts we will work that way. One common thread for all is that I try to help each student find and craft their own style. Everyone needs to have their own unique sound, and I try to help them find it for whatever their goals are.
