I am a classical pianist with a Master’s in Piano Performance from Juilliard, a Bachelor’s degree in piano from Mannes and a DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) degree from the Manhattan School of music, where I finished my dissertation on the evolution of Scriabin’s harmonic language within his Etudes op 8, 42 and 65. I have performed as a soloist in USA, Europe and China. I have built up a large private teaching studio over the years in addition to my work at the Manhattan School of Music and the Harlem School of the Arts (NYC)
I have been teaching privately since 2009. This included adult beginners, students ages 3-17, and college music majors taking a minor in piano. During my work at the Harlem School of the Arts - I have taught individual lessons and group classes for all age-groups. This also includes online lessons. While most of my students take piano for personal enjoyment, I have also prepared students for successful auditions at the Harlem School of the Arts (NYC), The Juilliard School (precollege and college) as well as the Manhattan School of Music.
For beginners, I generally start with the Faber piano adventures primer. However, that is only a starting point. I like to focus on first-rate piano literature which progresses in difficulty. Concepts are introduced as needed. Often, I have the student pick which pieces they might be interested in and set reasonable goals. This applies to students of all skills and ages. I use a combination of piano primers, my own exercises to prepare my students to tackle whichever works they may be interested in.
I want learning to be a rewarding and joyful experience. I have taught students of various needed and skill levels and I know the importance of nurturing individual talent. The single most motivating factor for students is usually a performance at the end of a specific period of study. I organize my lessons to achieve a reasonable goal. All of my students learn to read both clefs and acquire the tools to be able to tackle repertoire which is appropriate for their level. All of my students acquire a real love for the instrument.
