I've played drums for over 20 years specializing in rock drumming. I've studied music formally in 4 different universities and consider Tim Froncek and Scott Weltner as my biggest mentors. I've taught lessons on and off for over 20 years as well. I can play every genre and will help you fall in love with drumset. This will be fun!!! 4 way coordination, musicality, music theory, music appreciation, composition, and drum covers will all be covered!! It's easier than you think and just as fun if not more than you think!! Let's get this party started.
I started playing snare at 10 and drumset at 14 focusing mostly on rock drumming. I played quads and quints in marching band in high school and bass drum in college. I then studies jazz and percussion at Grand Rapids Community College and Grand Valley State University. I then studied Music composition at University of North Texas. I played church drums through out all of this as well as with jazz trios, rock bands, and cover bands. I've recorded 3 studio albums as well and currently play in a 70s cover band, church band, and metal project.
Methods vary by experience, age, demeanor, motivation, etcetera- but in general, we will start playing music YOU want to learn. A cover or style YOU want to play. What rock song do you want to know, or Rn B song, or country song, or church song. As long as it is not too difficult or out of your current ability we will do it. Of course if your more advanced we can go from there. Some books to think about are Stick Control, A New Breed, Sycopation. Some YouTube sites to look at are Drumeo's material. No worries- we will tackle the basics and then move on to bigger and better things.
I don't want to be too easy and I don't want to be too hard. We all have life events that keep us from practicing 16 hours a day. Also, you don't want to practice 15 minutes a week either. A good balance between work and play is needed. However, the student will be rewarded for challenging themself- both internally via self esteem and a sense of accomplishment, and externally with praise from me and friends and family. Not everyone wants to be a world class drummer. Some may want to just play on the weekends. However, some do want to go all out. We're all different and no matter what you want to do I will respect that and we will have loads of fun along the way.
Mike gave my son impromptu lessons to use as he began playing the tenor drums & Jazz Drums in High School. Little did my son know how much he learned in such a very short impromptu lesson and sill used today. I know Mike to be a kind, caring passionate drummer/teacher who enjoys sharing his passion for percussion.
