Overview:
I am an active musician based in the Portland metropolitan area who is hired regularly to perform for: jazz and cover bands, weddings, corporate events, musicals, and studio sessions. I also lead and write music for my own band. I attended Mount Hood Community College and Portland State University where I graduated with a B.S. in biology and in jazz studies. These experiences have allowed me to become well versed in many genres. Playing music is truly a passion for me! I bring this passion with every lesson I teach!
EXPERIENCE
I discovered my talent for teaching during my college days where I found myself tutoring classmates who were behind in their classes.  It was also around this time where I began giving music clinics to local high school bands. I enjoyed the feeling of helping others succeed and decided to start accepting private students.  Are you a beginning student still learning notes?  Maybe you're a seasoned player just wanting to get better? I will use my education and stage experience to assist you in reaching your goals as quickly as possible.
METHODS USED
I encourage my students to be technically proficient, musically literate, and good listeners. Having these core fundamentals down prepares my students to be able to play any style of music they choose. Lessons are always customized to fit the musical preferences of the student.  I use my preferred method books but am able to incorporate the books the student already owns within the lesson plans.  I encourage the use of technology such as smartphones, iPads, and play-a-longs as teaching aids.
LESSON STYLE
My students describe me as genuine and passionate with a youthful, energetic teaching style.  Lessons are always enjoyable and productive.  I show my students techniques to focus, and get more done with less wasted time. I cater my lessons to fit the student's learning style and to maximize potential.  Music is truly a passion for me and I enjoy seeing my students grow! My creativity and patience allow me to explain concepts that may have stumped you in the past. Every week we will set goals that will keep you motivated and excited.

I've been taking lessons from Michael once a week for eight weeks now, and with his help I have made dramatic improvements with my sax. Michael is a funny, nice, patient and all around great instructor. I'd recommend Michael, as an instructor, to anyone who wants to improve their skills and have fun while doing it.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
