Overview:
I'm a young professional bassist living in Chicago and am now fully submerged in the world of entertainment. I've traveled to all 7 continents after working in a cruise ship band for 3 years. Now I'm settled in the River North neighborhood and looking to pick up students who want to make great music and learn about advanced techniques and possibilities of their instrument. I'm a classically trained jazz major who has played in rock bands, punk bands, pop bands, and musical theater pits over 20 years of professional playing. I'm excited to teach theory, ear training, and other helpful, yet sometimes lesser known methods of mastering the bass and guitar
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching bass in high school to elementary and middle school students. In college, as my knowledge of music theory expanded, I began teaching guitar and voice as well. Students need not be able to read music to study with me, although if we begin a professional relationship, know that I use much theory and classical techniques in all styles of playing on both guitar and bass. I'm currently teach jazz music the most, but I have found that covering more styles as a teacher reminds me of how connected the world of music really is and I'd love to get back into teaching rock, classical, funk and other styles of music.
METHODS USED
For students in elementary, middle, and high school, I usually use the student's school ensemble (if in one) as a spring board into our lessons. I will go over what the students is already involved in initially to assess what the student needs to work on the most. In time, we will dive into advanced theory to really expand the student's knowledge of the instrument and the genre he or she wants to focus on the most. Learning new songs will also come about quickly as every musician must be historically aware of the great music that has come from the past.
LESSON STYLE
I happily teach at a pace that is comfortable for the student. If he or she only has time for a couple hours of practice a week, then we will progress at an equally stable pace in our lessons. I like to use written theory and ear training, but only if the student wants to learn with that technique. Guitarists and bassists can study tab with me as well. I encourage the student to bring in music they are excited about learning as the students often expose me to great music I may not have been familiar with before.
