Overview:
I am a music educator, performer, and recording artist with more than 40 years of experience. I studied classical music at The Peabody Consevatory of Music and Jazz at Berklee College of Music. I have studied with and taken private lessons from many great musicians. I have performed with and opened for numerous national acts such as James Brown, Patti Labelle, Chaka Khan, Chick Corea, The Rippingtons, and many more. I currently perform as a freelance musician and music educator in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching for more than 40 years. I began teaching private lesson in my home town, Baltimore, Maryland. I teach alto, saprano, and tenor saxophone, flute , piccolo, EWI, and piano. I also teach improvisation, music theory and ear training. I am experienced playing and teaching all genres of music from the age of 3 to 100. I have been in Dallas for 20 years. I taught in the Rockwall school system for 10 years and Brook Mays Music for 12 years. I have been a judge for ALL State- ALL Region music. Many of my students have played 1st chair in All Region bands.
METHODS USED
My methods of teaching are teaching what and how to practice. The basic ingredients in music are scales and chords and space. I am a firm believer of playing with a rhythm section from the beginning. Because of this, I use devices such as playing with tracks, myself, and other people. I provide audio and visual examples using recordings and videos. It is a myth that, with music, you either have it or you don't. I recommend singing what you play; this is not about singing, it's about hearing pitch. An instrument is nothing but a tool to express what's in your mind or what's on your paper.
LESSON STYLE
I will teach you how to finger and hold your instrument and how to get a great sound. I will teach you how to practice, listen, and how to play with others. You will learn theory and harmony. I will teach you how to use creativityand imagination and how to make your own music. It is time for educators to add creativity to music programs. We have short changed the music student long enough
