I have been involved in music as a player since 1966, and have been a featured soloist on both trumpet and clarinet with concert bands around the Southeast. I began playing my secondary instrument (trumpet) in 1970, and have studied conducting with symphony orchestras and concert bands. I have taught band at elementary, middle and high school levels, and was honored with the task of founding the band program at my last school.
I have taught clarinet and trumpet lessons since 1977. I have taught saxophone, french horn and trombone since 1979. I have had two students make first chair in All-State competition, and many Solo and Ensemble Award winners. Several of my students have earned scholarship offers, and some have gone on to win honors as high school and college band directors.
I focus on a skills based learning regimen. I often start beginners out without using a book, just learning to make the instrument perform before we add the complexities of music notation to the mix. With more advanced students I work on the small details of mastering the instrument, and translate that into performance. I favor method books that drill the student in those details, and add solo material for variety and to introduce different performance styles.
I take each student as a new individual, and tailor the instruction accordingly. I set clear and attainable goals, understanding that what worked for one person does not automatically work for another. One of my strengths has been the ability to adapt to each student's needs and address those needs with different strategies.
