BM, Capital University, Jazz Studies
In 2009, I graduated from Capital University with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies, and since graduation I've had many opportunities to play around the Columbus, OH area, performing rock, pop, and jazz music frequently. I love performing and listening to music, and as a teacher I want to share my appreciation with the rest of the community.
I have been teaching professionally since graduating from Capital University in 2009, and have had the pleasure of teaching individuals of all ages and interests. I've developed a lesson plan centered around building a complete musician, not just a guitarist. Integral to that plan is the development of reading, writing, and improvisational skills. I also like to focus on each students' own musical interests, studying music that they're interested in, as well as what I think is important for everyone to learn.
I usually start with Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Book 1 to get most students learning to read music. As we progress I begin to incorporate other materials and customize everyone's lesson to tailor to their distinct interests.
I like to have a very laid back, fun lesson for every student. Reinforcing that every person learns at their own pace is very important, as well as teaching good practice habits. I also like to remind everyone that mistakes are normal, and that even the best musicians make mistakes quite often. Listening to music is a must for any musician, so I often like to find and listen to a little music during lessons as well. By discussing musical selections, we can usually come to a higher understanding.
