2020 Angelo State University Concerto Competition Winner
I’m very passionate and very excited about all things piano. I enjoy passing my knowledge regarding the piano to others. Music has been a very important part of my life and remains to this day a very important part of my life. I am blessed to be continuing to learn piano at Angelo State University and to corroborate with fellow musicians should a piano be needed. I am very happy to be living my dream. It is with great excitement that I am going to sing in Carnegie Hall next summer, even though it’s not my primary. I am all the more motivated to perform in Carnegie Hall on the piano at some point in the future. It is my hope after pursuing my Bachelor’s of Music in piano Performance, and my Bachelor’s in Arts in both Mathematics and Sociology, to audition to Juilliard School of Music in New York City and to the University of Music in Vienna, Austria
I have been formally studying piano for 38 years. I am currently pursuing my piano performance degree from Angelo State Univeristy in San Angelo Texas. I am a junior. I have been teaching piano since 1999 to various ages and people from all walks of life. I am currently an instructor of piano at Emmanuel School of Fine Arts in town. I also am the pianist for St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church, also accompany the Glen Middle School choirs, accompany for contest for various high schools, substitute on piano and organ for local church organists/pianists, have played with various ensembles including the Angelo State University Symphony Orchestra, Angelo State University Jazz Ensemble, and the Angelo State University Wind Ensemble and other small ensembles where piano was required. I am currently preparing for my junior recital to be given at Angelo State University at a later date.
I usually teach from the James Bastien Piano Method books. However if there is a certain methodology you would wish to learn, I am very open to teaching from that. I also teach students on how to practice effectively. I like to teach with the Socratic Method as much as possible. I want to encourage thinking and will ask questions to facilitate thinking. I integrate sight-reading, theory, technic into my lessons. It is my hope that eventually my students can come together for an online recital every long semester as performing on the piano is an important aspect of learning how to play the piano.
It is important for me that a student be passionate about music and what they are learning. I understand that students progress at different speeds than other students. I take each student on a case by case basis and adapt my teaching styles to best suit them so that they may progress while maintaining their passion regarding music. I also ask the students if they have goal pieces or other long term goals that they have in mind, and we work together to meet them. It is not only a journey for the student, but one that the teacher embarks on with the student as well.
