I'm looking forward to sharing the love of music with others as I use research-based strategies to motivate students to achieve their best results. I started teaching other flautists in high school, and continued to teach my peers as students in college. I find that helping students figure out effective ways to practice helps speed to process along, help students stay motivated, and achieve the results they want without pressure or anxiety. I've played with 200 other flautists at the Henry Mancini Stamp Dedication at the Disney Concert Hall in LA, as an experimental rock flautist in my own bands, and with other performing musicians throughout San Diego.
I began teaching group lessons in high school, about 13 years ago. I have been teaching private students for the past 3 years. I love teaching flute because the practice of creating a beautiful sweet tone emphasizes a focus on the breath which promotes mindfulness and relaxation. To make practice fun, I suggest that students should pick out a songbook of their favorite music so that they are excited to pick up the instrument and practice to improve. Lessons with me are a fun, relaxing environment to explore and learn. I love to work with all age groups to help you hone your technique and sound. Finally, a regular consistent practice schedule is critical to your success and will help you to enjoy playing your instrument.
For children 7-11, I suggest a fundamentals book like Standard of Excellence or Accent on Achievement. Later, I will introduce an exercise book called the Rubank's Method, which helps with articulation and technical skill. I also will ask the student to pick a fun songbook which they will be motivated to practice. For adults, we can develop a lesson plan together that develops your skills in the direction and repertoire that you enjoy. I focus on positive behavior modification methods that build habits at your own pace and lead to success in ways that research has shown to be fun and long-lasting.
I always aim to create an environment that leads students to discover their own passion for music! I provide constructive feedback which always focuses on the positive so the student learns to pay attention to what they are doing right. Setting reachable goals every lesson helps a student feel like they are in control of their own success and builds their motivation to succeed. I believe it is important that the student learn to recognize their own accomplishments so that as they are practicing, they can begin to become the best judges of their own progress and get the most out of their lessons.
