Overview:
I am a passionate, highly-organized, outcome-driven, and motivated professional cello teacher with solid experience teaching students of all ages musical concepts, such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture, and structure; as well as performance, composition, and reading and listening skills. I have a Master of Music degree in cello performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music, and I love to pass on what I have learned throughout my many years of studies to other aspiring cellists!
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching back in my high school days when local grade school students were in need of a teacher to continue their studies over the summer. I later took numerous pedagogy courses in college that only added to and solidified my skills as an experienced cello teacher. I always encourage consistent and smart practicing, and I provide students with method and scale books, as well as fun exercises to do with them. I believe that students should always have fun, but the should also learn as much as they can, and I make those two points my top priorities. I love getting to know students and figuring out what inspires them and motivates them!
METHODS USED
For beginning students, I like to start with the beginnig Suzuki books, and I incorporate many Suzuki methods into my teaching style. As an accompaniment to Suzuki, I also use Klengal's Technical Studies for the Violoncello, Vol. 1 in order to solidify a solid understanding of scales and hand positions. Once a student demonstrates appropriate dexterity, I begin to introduce solo repetoire that they would like to prepare for studio performances and any other pieces that they have an interest in playing. Like I said, I always want my students to have fun while they're learning!
LESSON STYLE
Each week at the end of their lesson, my students and I will sit down without the cello and discuss everything that they learned and everything that they need to work on for their next lesson. Together, we set small realistic goals and acknowledge accompishments with small rewards in order to nurture and embolden each student. I always encourage students to enter competitions, festivals, and other programs, as setting larger end goals can be the ultimate motivators!
