BA, Lock Haven University, Music
MA, The University of Florida, Music
I have been a guitar instructor for 12 years. I earned a Bachelor's degree in music from Lock Haven University as well as a Master's degree in music from the University of Florida. In 2016 I became the first American guitarist in history to sign an endorsement contract with the British guitar company, Kingdom Guitars. I am also endorsed by world renown guitar pickup company, DiMarzio. I have recorded music with guitar legend Michael Angelo Batio. I have also played with Joe Stump of Berkeley School of Music as well as Joel Hoekstra of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
During my time at Lock Haven University, I was the school's music tutor. After graduating, I taught for six months in a K-12 public school. I joined the world famous School of Rock and taught over 100 different students how to play guitar. I have also been a guitar teacher for Pittsburgh's Lincoln Park Academy of Performing Arts as well as the guitar instructor for the PA Cyber Charter school. I have experience teaching students of all ages and can teach any style of guitar playing as well as the associated music theory.
I do not use one specific method of teaching since I have never found a single method that meets the needs of every student. Every student learns differently and needs their own personal curriculum and method. Once I have identified the specific learning characteristics of a student, I plan their personal lessons accordingly and choose an appropriate book or written method to use with them. As someone who is completely self-taught, I am capable of identifying the issues that a student may be having and addressing them from the learner's perspective.
I allow the student to decide what they are going to learn. Since the guitar is a staple instrument in so many styles, I let the student decide what path they are going to pursue on the instrument, and then I work in the basic skills while learning the songs and tunes that the student loves. In my experience, this is much more effective and holds the student's attention better than sitting them down and making them drill etudes written 200 years ago. If the student is not enjoying the instruction, then the teacher is not teaching properly.
