I absolutely LOVE music!!! Let me say that first. I really enjoy playing, listening to, teaching, and learning about music. Most of my playing experience came from growing up in the church and playing in various school and extracurricular music groups. I currently play professionally but I enjoy giving back to students what others have given me over the years. I hope to do the same for my students. My favorite styles are rock, CCM, Contemporary Gospel, R&B, Latin, and Pop/Electronica.
I've been teaching privately since 2005 when I taught a young drummer who no one thought could be taught. Teaching him was a great learning experience and he is now a colleague of mine and has gone on to do some great things with what he has learned from me. I don't believe a person can't learn an instrument. It's my job as your teacher to guide you on your musical journey and help you succeed. All you have to do is put in the time and effort.
My method varies for each student since every student will learn differently. I start by assessing where a student is at in terms of skill level and what their intentions are for learning how to play drums/percussion. For younger students, I'll start with getting their coordination together so they can begin to play and be involved in the learning process. After that, I'll begin to teach fundamentals and stylistic things to get them going.
I'm very laid-back but focused. I expect students to work at this and put forth the effort. I also understand that life happens and a student may have missed some practice time. I'm okay with that. My teacher did that for me so I'll do the same for my students. I don't believe in over-criticizing a student. I like to positively reinforce accomplishments and good habits and take the time to explain and fix issues that need improvement. Music should be fun, so I don't need to be a taskmaster.
