No official degrees, just 35 years of playing drums.
No awards.
I’ve been playing drums for about 35 years. I’ve toured the entire US including some European countries. I’ve been on record labels, played many live shows of all types. I’ve also c-written songs, produced, engineered, and performed on quite a few successful albums. I started drumming in the 5th grade and continued through high school. I then starting focusing on performance and song writing. I joined some original bands and began building those songs and albums to make those bands successful.
My teaching experience is a little more limited. I haven’t taught for quite a few years and have decided to get back into it with the right student that matches with the experience and talent I bring to the table. I’m not a jazz player, but more of a rock drummer that plays to what the song requires. I taught some students many years back and eventually stopped teaching to focus on performance for the bands I was in and also on family. My teaching methods will always focus on what the student needs.
I believe in practice and visualization. In addition to physical practice, watching and hearing someone perform something is more than beneficial to learning and really getting those difficult concepts. It’s very important to list out what works best for each person. Some people are visual while others are audio focused while some are both. Many students move faster than others. A key component is to keep good notes and track what was easy and what was difficult. I also like to track music styles and the individuals the student has followed.
My approach fits with the student and parental desire. Once we know those parameters, we can proceed and make it work in the best way for the students success. I always take time to understand where the student is coming from, their goals, the parent goals. I’ll adjust my style based on how much desire there is, how much time they and what their current goals are for music, drumming and whatever else they’re striving for. Drumming can help someone be more musical and it doesn’t have to stop there.
