Overview:
Cellist Minjung Kang was born and raised in South Korea. At age of 7, she began her music studies in piano and won multiple awards in piano competitions by the age of 9 such as Piano competitions hosted by famous piano manufacturing companies in Korea such as Samick and Young Chang. At age of 11, she had her first piano recital at Hoam Performing Art Center as the award of the competition. She picked up her first cello at age of 11, and studied under Kuk Rok Park, one of the most famous cellists in Korea. Minjung won her first award in cello competition at Dong-A Youth Competition and followed it with 1st prize at Chungnam Philharmonic Orchestra Classic Competition two years in a row. As results, Minjung performed with Chungnam Philharmonic Orchestra twice at the Civic Art Center. Based on her multiple winnings, she received full scholarship to attend in one of the most prestige college in Korea, Sookmyung Women's University. Minjung continued her music studies in classical and contemporary musics, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Cello Performance. She also joined the Hyundai Philharmonic Orchestra who specialized in classical and contemporary performance in many different cities in several different countries. Minjung took up yet another challenge to study abroad and completed her MME degree at University of Illinois. She has been teaching many levels and ages of students throughout her career. Minjung is looking forward to meeting new students whom she would like to share her love of music. She is currently a member of Capital City Symphony.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience began after I received Master of Music Education degree. I taught numerous students since then. I have exceptional experience in teaching little children learning their first instruments to upper grade students who are serious about studying music in college. Some of my students continued to study cello and became professional players themselves. For the beginner students I emphasize mastering the basics, so that they can have the good foundation to grow on. It is very important, and my previous and current students and their parents would agree with me.
METHODS USED
For beginning students, my main goal is to lead them to appreciate and love music for the rest of their lives. I work on fundamentals like the proper posture, developing good ears for correct tones, and how to correctly hold the bow. A perfect understanding of basics goes a long way. My favored teaching material for beginner student is Suzuki books, Popper etudes, Galamian scale book, Dozauer book, and all standard common concertos and sonatas. However, I chose the material based on student's skill level and their preference.
LESSON STYLE
Every student has different pace of of growth. The most important goal in my teaching for both students and myself is making a progress. Little encouragement helps students to not to lose their interest in music, and continue to work harder to improve. However, sometime little bitter reality is also needed. With a good combination of both, I lead my students to set their realistic goals and help them achieve them. First lesson, I have a conversation with the parents and adult students about setting a goal and a plan to get there.

What an amazing teacher! My son had several teachers for his cello, and she is the best one ever. I would recommend her for anyone who is interested in learning to play cello.

She is enthusiastic and professional, and at the same time, very positive and friendly. She is clear about what I need to focus on, for example, accurate bowing technique and correct pitch, which I think is of utmost importance especially for novices. I always enjoy working with her. Yes, I highly recommend her.
