I am a passionate music instructor with over 30 years of experience teaching music in various capacities. Beginning in 1993 from the classrooms of preschoolers through 12th grade I enjoyed leading choirs, putting on musicals, touring, competitions, and teaching theory and piano classes. In 2010 in California, I opened my own studio for private lessons and hosted many student recitals over the years. In 2022 we moved to Idaho where I am currently building my student roster so that I can host many more recitals, and help students on their musical journeys. I hope you become one of them!
I had always wanted to be a high school music teacher and I did that for 5 years right after college. However I quickly realized that having a family in addition would create too much of a strain for me and I decided to do church music for several years while my kids were young. Then, I began teaching music at the elementary and preschool levels. From there, I realized that one-on-one is where I feel I have the greatest impact on inspiring a lifelong love of music and gives me the greatest joy in watching students reach their goals.
I like to use Alfred's Piano Basics for my beginners. They have a system for all age groups. As students progress, they are encouraged to bring in their own music or ask for certain songs that they would like to accomplish. This keeps them engaged and motivated. When it comes time for recitals or competitions I will typically recommend something, but it's always agreed upon between student, teacher, and often parents. I like to choose songs which are challenging but also ones that highlight the students abilities.
The main thing to remember is that not one student fits the mold of another. It is important to discover the learning style of each student and teach accordingly. Now this is easier said than done, but when you've been teaching as long as I have, you learn to adapt your teaching style to their learning style. I am not strict or stern. I don't scare my students. But I do expect students to listen and respond. We set attainable goals, and celebrate every achievement. This inspires them to practice even more. And there's nothing like a performance to motivate someone to practice, so I like to schedule as many as possible!
