Overview:
I was born in Belgrade, Serbia, where I began piano studies at the age of 7. After completion of elementary music school, I enrolled Music High School majoring in piano performance, music theory and voice. During this period I made my first important public performances as a piano soloist. I received a Scholarship of Republic Serbia towards my studies in Piano Performance and Music Pedagogy at the Belgrade Music Academy. I studied with Dr. Jokut Mihailovic and Ninoslav Zivkovic, and performed with the chamber ensemble and as a soloist on number of different concerts throughout the country. In 2005 I continued my music education at Florida International University, where I received master’s degree in music composition. In 2016 I have graduated from University of Miami Frost School of Music earning doctoral music degree.
EXPERIENCE
I am deeply committed music educator who began teaching privately in 2002. I have taught in music elementary, middle school, and music high school as well as at the university being a teaching assistant at Florida International University and University of Miami. I have taught students of any ability or level, and it is always a pleasure to work with a new student, and to create and shape his or her musical personality. I believe it is important that the children experience music and art through learning and playing an instrument; that is a powerful tool in shaping one’s personality and aesthetics.
METHODS USED
With the beginning students I use Alfred and Bastien piano instructional books. Also, the children simultaneously learn to read notes and understand music notation. In my teaching method the goal is to combine high level of technique with musicality and individual interpretation. The beginners’ lessons are systematized as a successful blend of fun musical games and new academic material, thus learning new is fun and inspiring.
In teaching adults, after they are comfortable with the basics, they can play songs in the genre they prefer - classical, pop or jazz.
LESSON STYLE
Believing that each student deserves individual approach, I am enthusiastic to help people of all ages to learn, grow, and succeed in music. Throughout my 15 years of experience, I have learned that young students develop their knowledge slowly in time, in their own pace. In first part of the lesson, the student plays scales, arpeggios and chords as a warm-up, following by short technical exercises, which expose him or her to new musical situations, and develop the playing skills. This makes learning new pieces easier and faster. Students usually work on two contrasting songs at a time. I make sure that the songs I teach are instructional and at the same time appealing to the student.
