I started playing drums at age 11. My father played trombone in the NY Philharmonic, so I was fortunate to study with the renowned Elden "Buster" Bailey. After high school I attended the Juilliard School. Later I began teaching at a couple local music stores. That is when I discovered my love for teaching. It's very rewarding to see a student develope into a fine drummer and musician.
EXPERIENCE
My first experience with teaching dates back to high school. Our marching band needed some drummers so I offered to teach some classmates for $3 an hour! I've been teaching in music stores and privately for 25 years. My students love their lessons and usually study with me for many years. I make learning fun but also focus on developing well rounded musicians.
METHODS USED
I teach all of my students how to read music as well as play by ear. I think both things are important. I focus on both technique and playing musically. Dynamics are something that many drummers ignore. To truly be a good drummer you must listen to the other instruments around you.
LESSON STYLE
A strong foundation is key to becoming a good drummer. I also encourage students to play many styles of music. The more well rounded that you are makes you a better player with the music of your choice. It's always rewarding to have a student make it into All-County band. Many students start their own rock bands. To me it doesn't matter what style of music they like, as long as they enjoy playing.
