Hello! I am a trumpet player and music theoretician who loves teaching and sharing my knowledge with students of all ages. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Idaho's esteemed Lionel Hampton School of Music with a BM in Trumpet Performance, a BM in Music Education, a BS in Music Theory, and a Minor in Jazz Studies. I then went on to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst where I graduated with an MM in Trumpet Performance and a Graduate Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy. I have led a diverse career performing with jazz bands, pit orchestras, rock bands, and symphony orchestras, and I believe my experience in these groups makes me the ideal teacher of any style.
Teaching has been a regular part of my life since my undergraduate days. At the University of Idaho, I had the opportunity to be a Learning Assistant for freshman music theory, aural skills, and jazz theory; a position that involved more actual teaching than the typical teaching assistantship. At this time, I also ran a private studio with around a dozen trumpet students. As part of my music education degree, I completed my student teaching at the high school level and find extreme joy from teaching groups of students. I had a teaching assistantship at the UMass Amherst where I taught many students at both freshman and sophomore theory levels. Finally, I have been a tutor online with Varsity Tutors for a couple years now, where I tutor adult students for the PRAXIS music exams.
For beginning students who are children, I typically start by making the trumpet a game. Focusing on setting up a firm embouchure and obtaining a clear buzz on the mouthpiece sets up students for success! Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Regardless of age, all lessons actively engage the ears of the student and focus on exposing the student to more music.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at their own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student's desire to progress and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. I encourage an atmosphere of making mistakes, as mistakes are a wonderful thing and a great path to learning!
