I have a bachelors and masters degree in vocal performance with ample experience in classroom, one on one, and group education with honors, from Pacific Lutheran University and Northwestern University respectively. I have been teaching privately and in large settings for over six years and have taught ear training, music theory, classical piano, classical voice, musical theatre, and other genres as well. In addition to teaching, I am a performer nationally and have sung with reputable companies such as Des Moines Metro Opera, Vashon Opera, Symphony Tacoma, and have placed in national and regional levels of classical singing and musical theatre competitions.
I teach all ages (4-75), all backgrounds, and all sorts of wants/needs. Some students just want to learn how to sing in choir more freely. Others are pursuing music degrees. Some want to learn how to play a song or two on the piano. Others want to take RCM exams. I love meeting students where they're at and helping them out along the way! I believe everyone can and should make music! In our lessons, depending on your skill level, we will focus on different elements of technique and musical expression. Depending on each student’s goals, we will work on a song or songs which could culminate for a recital, audition, or just for fun! Music is for everyone. I look forward to meeting you and helping you work towards your goals!
I believe each person is uniquely different in this life and that goes for music too. For piano beginners, I like to use the standard Faber curriculum, if you're more advanced we can explore adding some more challenging books such as the Hanon scales, Junior Hanon for beginners, etc. I like to supplement core pieces with scales, technical books, and ad hoc assignments that I sometimes have students pick. For voice, it will very much depend on your goals and where you are at vocally, but my voice teaching style is very much grounded in healthy technique and learning about vocal pedagogy, no matter what genre of music you want to sing!
Music is for everyone and I want lessons to always be a safe space, and a fun space. There is no one right pace for people to learn, whatever works best for you! We can achieve this by setting S.M.A.R.T goals, as well as potential benchmarks to rate progress by. I like to approach each lesson with empathy, humor, and curiosity. I think there is much we can learn from ourselves and each other, so I like to keep my teaching focused, exciting, but also attentive to each persons needs and what goals we are trying to achieve in a given day.
Miya is an excellent voice teacher. She really connected with my daughter and inspired her. Miya went above and beyond. She came to the solo ensemble competition and gave my daughter a fantastic pep talk that helped her relax and give a great performance. I was also very impressed with how professional Miya conducted herself. She was younger than some of our previous music instructors but she was fabulous!
I had a great experience taking voice lessons from Miya! She is an amazing, thoughtful, and talented teacher. Before I took lessons, I was unconfident in singing alone or singing solos. Since taking lessons with Miya, I have gained much more confidence as a soloist, and have grown so much as a singer. I am very grateful to Miya for all that she has taught me!
Ms. Miya is an incredible piano teacher. She is full of energy, love, and genuine enthusiasm in what she does. In addition to the technical aspects of music, she is talented in encouraging self expression, emotion, and telling a story within playing piano. Miya has both a friendly but professional demeanor and I would strongly recommend her to any student looking for a teacher.
Miya is a highly skilled musician with an abundance of talent and charisma. She is a thoughtful teacher who strives to meet the individual needs of each student, and I think anyone would be lucky to study with her! Five stars from me!
