Overview:
I have played the violin since I was 8 years old in school orchestras and small ensembles. I have also learned Irish traditional music in Ireland, from the Irish in music sessions and in more formal school settings. I spent 9 months there obtaining a Masters in Ethnomusicology. I have been teaching violin since 1991, the year I graduate with my Bacholar's degree in Music History. I have taught in studios as well as student's homes. The age range of my students is between 3 and 70. I teach both classical and Irish fiddle. I can also teach country fiddle and viola. I am a composer and could also teach music composition.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching in 1991 after graduating with a degree in Music History. I also gained training at that time as a Suzuki Teacher books 1 to 4. As I grew as a teacher I learned that to reach students I had to mold to their way of learning, so I now don't use one particular method. I also spent 9 months in Ireland playing in sessions with the Irish, and going to the University of Limerick. I have traveled all over Ireland and played in many different music sessions, and so I teach Irish fiddle as well. I have taught as young as 3, and as old as 70 to play the violin.
METHODS USED
I use a variety of methods and techniques. I have training in the Suzuki Method, as well as more traditional methods of violin instruction. In my lessons knowing scales and arpeggios will be important. I also teach about keys and time signatures early on. Though I use the suzuki method, some of the time, reading music is also taught early on in the lessons, depending on the age of the student. I also use Leapold Auer's book one to help with rhythim and tone production. I am also a trained Montessori teacher and when teaching younger children tend not to talk as much with older chilren and adults. My emphasis is on allowing the musician within to grow.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is student oriented meaning the more questions you bring me the better. I will allow students to learn at their own pace. For younger students I allow them to explor the instrument while showing them how to hold it and play. For older students I teach simple songs as well as scales and arpeggios. I tell students that if they only have 5 minutes a day, they should at least play scales. I use various techniques to teach students hoe to play, trying to mold to their learning style.
