Overview:
I have been playing piano since elementary school and discovered very early on how much I love it. I took up the violin later though the piano continues to be my first love. Long before graduating from high school, I knew I wanted to study music in college and make music a part of my daily life. I discovered the joy of collaborative playing in college and hve played with a number of different musicians since then. I love working with people of all ages and helping them learn about music and come to love it the way I do.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching piano for nearly ten years now. I know that every person is different and that there is not one right way to teach or to learn. I work to find things that work best for each student. I believe that reading music is a very important cornerstone in learning to play an instrument. Once we have achieved decent proficiency in it, I like to branch out beyond a basic method book into learning music chosen by my students because practicing is a lot more fun, and therefore more likely to happen regularly, if we're working on music that is fun as well as educational.
METHODS USED
I generally choose to use Faber as a method book for all my beginning students, using the age appropriate track for each student ranging from too young to read yet to adult learners. I believe that both the lesson book and the theory books are highly important and necessary. Depending on the student and their wants and needs, other books for each level may be added. Once a basic comprehension of reading music and technique have been achieved, I like to branch out into other repertoire of whichever style or styles are most interesting to the student.
LESSON STYLE
I like piano lessons to be enjoyable while still providing an atmosphere of learning. Exactly how a lesson unfolds varies from student to student in order to fit the needs and desires of each individual student. Each student and I will determine what pace works best for that student. We will also work together to determine how to construct our lessons so we can introduce new information in ways that best help that particular student understand the concepts. While I believe that method books provide an important foundation, I don't think that they are the only way to learn new musical concepts. Using music that appeals to a student is also important because it helps make music fun, not just a chore.
