I am someone that loves music and truly believes that anyone can learn music at any age! In 2017, I graduated from Loras College with a Bachelor of Art degree in K-12th grade Music Education with an emphasis on instrumental (I majored in Flute and minored in piano), but I also know a handful of woodwind instruments, and took singing lessons for 7 years. My experience is a wide range involving teaching different age groups to knowing multiple instruments plus vocal. My passion for music makes me excited every time I teach students from old to new; music is an a life long skill and I would love to be the teacher to give them a start!
EXPERIENCE
Music has been around my whole life, as I got more experience I was in charge of small group rehearsals for Flute, Alto Saxophones, and vocal.
In college, I helped with Dubuque Community Schools with their instrumental placement for 4th grade, focusing on Flute.
Right after I graduated college, I started to Substitute teach for the Dubuque Community Schools, the Cedar Valley Catholic schools.
in January 2019, I started to teach at St. Athanasius as PreK-8th grade general music teacher and I am loving the job teaching kids about music!
METHODS USED
What I like to do is find out what my students know about music and then work from there. For instrumental I start with basics and play through scales to see how they play and how they can improve. For students that are younger or completely new to music, we would start with very basic general music terms and would become very close to the instrument of choice knowing the parts, how sound works with the instrument and how to properly play the instrument (close to the Suzuki method). my instructions are easy to follow no matter the age or ability level.
LESSON STYLE
I believe that anyone can learn music! I understand that students learn at different paces and I accommodate for everyone. When I see a student have their "ah-ha!" moment it makes me feel that the student is really enjoying and understanding music and that is the most rewarding thing for me with teaching. Even though I accommodate, I still like to push students just a little past their comfort zone, because I believe a little challenge helps the student to move in the right direction and to also show them that they do have the skills to improve!
