I am an experienced teacher and tutor who has been playing violin for all my life. I have over 400 hours of teaching experience, and love working with students of all ages and experience levels. I played in multiple orchestras throughout my time in college, and have worked with teachers including Nancy Wilson and Eric Wyrick. I enjoy playing and teaching a range of genres; through I am classically trained, I love playing jazz, folk, musical theater, rock, and more! I like working with students at their own pace to meet their personalized goals.
I have been tutoring for the past four years, and have experience working with students both virtually and in-person. I am not Suzuki-certified, however my teaching style does include a mix of Suzuki and independent materials. I like to teach music theory skills concurrently with technical lessons so that students can reinforce their practical training. I find that this makes the process more enjoyable, whether for young learners or adult students. I like to understand my students' learning goals, and make sure we are on the same page about learning speed and preferred musical styles!
I like to have a consistent plan for all of my lessons, so that students know what to expect, as well as the best methods for practicing. I always start my students off with a warm-up consisting of scales or a technical exercise that relates to the piece that we are working on. I then go over the "trouble spots" of a piece with the student before diving into longer sections. I like to finish off with a piece that I have chosen together with the student, which sometimes is a pop or contemporary piece that we can play together. I like to make sure the music we are learning is a good match for the student.
I am a flexible and patient teacher, and want to meet each individual student where they are currently at in their learning process. I celebrate all progress and goals with my students, and love seeing them grow as musicians! I aim to instill a love of music into my students, and want them to be able to gain joy from their playing. I like to talk to my students to get feedback on how they are feeling about the pieces and their progression to make sure that lessons are working the best that they can for both of us.
