Overview:
As a piano teacher and composer, I have always loved teaching and working with children in the area of music and the arts. I graduated from Ithaca College School of Music with a BA in music composition and an instrumental emphasis on string bass and piano. I have been performing throughout grade school, in college and after college. I have been with groups such as the New Patlz Symphony Orchestra and the Saddleback Church Orchestra on string bass, and the Ulster County Concert Band on clarinet. I sang with the Ithaca College Woman's Chorale at Lincoln Center in New York City in 2005.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching as early as 2003, while in high school on clarinet. I continued to teach during college as a voice coach, and have been teaching piano, music theory and music composition to this date. I have worked with both children and adults, in classrooms and one on one. One of the things that distinguishes me from other teachers is how I tailor my program for each student, because everyone learns differently and has different strengths and talents. My goal is to bring to the forefront the potential of every student.
METHODS USED
For children who are just starting, I use Bastien Piano Basics Primer Level-Level 2. From here, students graduate to selections primarily from Bach, Chopin and Beethoven. For adults I use Alfred's beginner adult course. I also supplement these books with several books that I have in my personal library, such as Keith's Snell's Essential Piano Repertoire. For scales I use Keith Snell's series and for technique I use Schaum's Fingerpower series. Depending on the student, I may branch out to pop, or introduce them to lead sheets which are used more in contemporary band settings. Generally I teach classical, but I am open minded depending on the preferences of the parent or student.
LESSON STYLE
My goal as a teacher is to see my students grow not only in skill, but in their love for music. With this in mind, I make a special effort not to overwhelm my students. I know that every person has a different set of talents and strengths, so I design my curriculum to fit each students' needs. As a whole, the idea behind my teaching is to create a challenge without creating stress because at the end of the day, happy students produce great music! I also value the experience of performing.
