Overview:
When I was in middle and high school, I can say that I was not the most talented saxophonist. Even in college, I had to play catch-up. I never had access to a teacher that provided me with the insight to develop myself. That was true until, my third year of higher education. My passion and drive to become a better version of my past flared. For me, music is a passion and my life, but it is secondary to me. The thing that excites me to wake up each and every day is teaching. Whether it is music, or not, teaching gives me a sense of pride. I could perform for thousands and thousands of people, but for me, nothing compares than watching my pupils succeed. That is why I teach.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught music since I was in Highschool. It wasn't just lessons for middle schoolers or young children. I taught and ran my high school's Jazz Band when I was a Junior and Senior. Due to a lack of funding, it was not a regular class, so it was up to me to take the reigns. Since then, I have grown and taught many more private students, but also different schools and places. Most recently, I taught voice at a summer conservatory for the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. I have taught a range of ages and truly can connect with anyone willing to do so themselves.
METHODS USED
For any type of student, beginner or not, I focus on building the skills of the individual to create successes on their own. My goal is to provide the student with skills and abilities that not only will provide them with a fruitful musical life, but also allow them to transfer the ethics and habits to any other career. I also go in depth to reasoning and pedagogical reasoning for my explanations so that the student can engage in critical thinking and draw conclusions on their own. Listening to music will also be employed so that each student can learn from others that they admire, even if they are inaccessible in the real world.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is very much praxial and based off of skill reinforcement. For any instrument, I will incorporate the Kodaly method (solfege) of musicianship into the curriculum. For me, my goal is to teach the student how to learn for themselves. I focus on practice techniques, assessment of tone, sound, rhythms, pitches, etc. Rather than spoon feed all of the answers to the students, I wish to encourage each musician to develop their own critical mind towards the art that they create. Students will be challenged in thought and expressivity, and technique will take precedence over speed.
