I'm a musician who enjoys teaching just as much as I enjoy performing. I have sung in many operas, sung for many venues including school dances, sports games and on recordings. I have sung and played in multiple genres and continue to sing, perform, compose, teach and conduct. I want people to love music and get involved in music regardless of how far they intend to go with it because music can really bless someone's life.
I have performed in all styles and genres of music including 13 years as a rock musician, 10 years as a opera singer, and 11 years as a church musician. I have two degrees from the University of Denver in Music Performance with an emphasis in Voice. I have played Guitar since I was eight and Piano since I was eighteen. I have taught privately since I was sixteen and I have taught two years at the college level. I have also taught Theory and Ear Training privately and at the college level, so I am very comfortable teaching many areas of music and enjoy teaching them as well.
Depending on the instrument that the student studies and how old they are is how approach teaching them. For example, my voice students always start out learning the same techniques and warm-ups, but where we go from there is based on the age of the voice and how a person wants to learn. With Guitar and Piano I may use a book as a supplement to my teaching, but not as the focal point of my teaching because every learns differently and are in a different place in their journey.
I want everyone to feel that they can learn music and that music can be fun to learn and grow in. So I strive to learn how a student learns and do my best to cater my teaching style and the materials I use to help them learn to the way they learn. For example, if you are a repetitive learner than I will try to solidify the techniques by teaching those techniques over and over again until they are absorbed. I would also choose a book for them based on their repetitive learning style. The reasons for this is so the student can learn effectively and enjoy practicing because they are seeing the result of the labors.
