Overview:
My goal is to create life-long learners, so you may always find time for practice and a place to perform great music!
I provide private music instruction each week teaching lessons on a variety of instruments and have even served as a substitute teacher, as well as performing with various bands and ensembles over the years.
I am originally from New York, where I lived until I was almost 7.
I then lived approx. 7 years each in:
Northern California, North Carolina, and Southern New Jersey respectively.
In 2007 my wife Stephanie & I moved to San Antonio Texas.
In December 2014, Stephanie & I welcomed our baby daughter Kyleigh!
EXPERIENCE
I am a fully-certified music educator of 18 years: I have taught both middle school band & choir to at-risk youth for 3 years, as well as elementary music at a private Christian academy for an additional 3 years.
With the saxophone as my principal instrument of 32 years now, I also play many other instruments that I teach, including: Piano, Violin, Drums, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, and Trombone.
As for my formal education, I received the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; and the Master of Music Education degree from The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA, 2010).
METHODS USED
Everyone has the capacity to be a musician...therefore, I teach students of all ages and include all cultures (all styles and musical genres). No one is a 'beginner' when it comes to recognizing great music, so I strive to create musicians who can reach their own goals...thus, building independence is the key: My job is done when my students can do what I do without needing me! For more experienced students, I assess your present skills upon our first lesson via a variety of repertoire so as to 'diagnose' what areas you need improvement on musically speaking. Then, I can 'prescribe' what methods are necessary for you (custom-tailored) in order to make the progress required to meet your goals!
LESSON STYLE
As I focus on the musical needs and interests of my students, I strive to create life-long musicians.
My lessons are structured into activities that incorporate various aspects of music appreciation:
Music theory, music history, music technology, performance practice, etc. (making such lessons comprehensive).
Typically, we begin with a repertoire of warm-up exercises custom-tailored to your instrument but also for your current skill level and learning style (as created by me). We then work on at least one or more project pieces (musical selections for performance, or song excerpts from various method books).
